Here's a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a profound meditation about our choices in loving one another.
A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The narrative commences when the couple move from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.
Both characters confront the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. At their core, they still love one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.
Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
